‘I was amazed:’ 10-foot gator goes for swim in New Smyrna Beach pool

Alligator safely removed by Florida wildlife officers

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Well, it’s Florida. And that means sometimes finding an alligator in your pool.

A large 10-foot alligator was found taking a dip in the swimming pool of a New Smyrna Beach home in Venetian Bay.

The resident, Martin Brenner, told News 6 his dog woke them up at 2 a.m. barking at the pool. That’s when he said they saw the gator.

“He was stretched across the length of the pool,” Brenner said. “I was amazed at how he got in. He didn’t tear anything or do any damage, he just pushed out the piece of screen.”

The reptile wouldn’t get out of the pool, so Brenner said he called the police who showed up with the FWC and trappers.

“We couldn’t figure out what would have attracted him, but we have a little cat that had gotten out and we don’t know if that was the situation or what,” he said.

Brenner said the trappers had to use a bang stick to get the gator out but they were finally able to carry him out.

“It took all of us to get in and try to get him up,” he said.

The strange incident comes after a 12-food gator was caught on video walking along a path children take to get to and from school.

The video showed four men wrangling the gator, described as an “absolute dinosaur,” into a pickup truck.
