‘Ripped it like a piece of paper:’ Milton tears off roof in Brevard 55+ community

Homeowner Robert Haskoor, 75, asking for donations in Barefoot Bay

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – The worst of Hurricane Milton in Brevard County came from tornado damage in Cocoa Beach, but in the south end of the county, another community is still picking up the pieces, too.

At a 55 and over neighborhood near Grant and Micco, Barefoot Bay resident Robert Haskoor showed News 6 reporter James Sparvero what’s left of his mangled roof.

The 75-year-old said the storm tore the roof off his mobile home and scattered it in his yard on Egret Circle.

”I guess a small tornado microburst picked up my carport, my screened-in porch, and my shed and it flipped it over the house,” Haskoor said. “And as it went over the house, it peeled my roof, and it flipped it over, and ripped it like a piece of paper.”

Haskoor said he turned to his faith as he laid in bed watching the news and began to hear the wind.”I said, ‘Oh Lord, put your hand on my roof like you have, always.’ And all of a sudden, we heard a boom!”

Haskoor said none of the materials are able to be saved because they’re either bent or old.

Moving forward his family is asking for donations and is also hoping to get help from FEMA.

FEMA and other resources are available to victims of the storm across Central Florida.

“This is a pretty decent community, too,” Haskoor said about his neighbors. “The people have been really nice, helping out whatever way they can because you know, everybody’s elderly here. And it’ll work out. I’m hopeful.”
