Volusia County students collect resources for Hurricane Milton victims

Schools collecting toiletries, non-perishable food, clothes

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Water, food, clothes and more.

Students in Volusia County have been collecting all of these items since Monday to help out other students and families in the district impacted by Hurricane Milton.

“Do you know anyone impacted by the storm? I’m a swimmer, and my swim team member, she had a tree fall on her house,” said DeLand High School Sophomore Josiah Estevez.

“My friend Taylor, he had a little flooding in his house because he lives a little low,” said DeLand High School Senior Cayle Decker.

Josiah and Cayle are just two of the students in the DeLand High Leadership helping to sort all the donations.

“I’ve never really been in a situation like this. I really get to come and dig into my community. I love doing it and it means everything,” said Josiah.

The students say the flooding in their area caused several families to lose their clothing and other resources they need to survive.

“During the hurricanes, everything sells out quick: water, toilet paper, and all that stuff. The more we can give to people, the better because people are struggling with supplies right now,” Cayle said.

“I think they were good on clothes. I think they’re looking more for toiletries and non-perishable food items. That’s an easy thing that people can use if they don’t have power if they’re still in a situation where they’re not their home location,” said DeLand High School Teacher Mendi Camacho.

Volusia County Schools officials say you can drop off items at any high school in Volusia County.

They are collecting:

  • Clothing
  • Toiletries
  • Gift Cards
  • Non-perishable Food

The high schools are open from 7:45 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.

The District plans on wrapping up their donation drive next Friday.
