Edgewater holding townhall to address flooding concerns

Meeting set for 6 p.m. at Bella Vista Baptist Church

EDGEWATER, Fla. – City leaders in Edgewater are holding a townhall meeting to address stormwater concerns after several cases of severe flooding over the last few months.

On Monday, residents are invited to the Bella Vista Baptist Church, located at 3232 S. Ridgewood Ave., to ask questions and hear about ongoing efforts to address flooding issues in the city.  The meeting is scheduled from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Frustrations have been growing with people living in Edgewater after strong thunderstorms in September caused widespread flooding in the Florida Storms neighborhood. Several properties saw flooding again when Hurricane Milton swept through Florida in October.

“It was almost all the way up to the front porch,” Florida Shores resident Glenn Moore said. “Our whole backyard was flooded.  It was coming in the porch, roof and everything.”

While the end of hurricane season is approaching, Moore said he and his neighbors are concerned anytime there’s a significant amount of rain in Edgewater.

“For some reason with each hurricane, it seems like the water level is going higher and higher and nothing’s being done about it,” Moore said.

The city council saw a large response from upset residents after flooding in September and fired now former City Manager Glenn Irby.

Interim City Manager Jeffrey Thurman is expected to attend Monday’s townhall, along with Mayor Diezel DePew.

“I just felt it was needed in the community to have a townhall now more than ever to know their council members are listening and their managers are working towards solutions towards this flooding issue,” DePew said.

Jim Mahaney, who also lives in the Florida Shores neighborhood, said he plans to attend Monday’s meeting and wants to hear from city leaders about actionable solutions.

“Hopefully everybody can work together and come up with something to fix this problem,” Mahaney said.
