DELTONA, Fla. – A 7-year-old Deltona boy with autism is missing after running away from home on Monday evening, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
In a release, deputies said the boy — identified as “Charlie” — ran north along Stillwater Avenue around 8 p.m.
Investigators said Charlie is non-verbal, and he could be attracted to Christmas lights and bodies of water. He was last seen wearing a black tee shirt and white/grey shorts.
“Deputies are actively searching the area and bringing in additional resources to aid in the search,” the release reads. “A reverse 911 call has been sent to area residents, and Charlie’s photo has been provided to area businesses.”
According to the sheriff’s office, K-9s are on the ground help with the search, though additional foot traffic through the area could affect their ability to track Charlie.
As a result, deputies are asking people to stay away for the time being.
“We do appreciate everyone who came out to help,” the release adds. “But if you can stay in your vehicles and out of the K-9 units’ path, that would be a huge help, as well!”
Anyone who sees Charlie is urged to call 911.
