While the deputy was in the bathroom, loss prevention officers received a radio announcement of a possible gunshot in the restrooms at the front of the store
The deputy inside of the loss prevention office rushed to the front of the store thinking there was an active threat, when he entered the women’s restroom and found a deputy ”walking towards the exit with what appeared to be blood on both of her legs,” the report states.
When asked what happened, the deputy said that she was removing her holstered firearm from her waist to use the restroom when the firearm discharged.
The wounded deputy then fell to the floor, where the responding deputy saw “a gunshot wound to her right inner thigh, and two gunshot wounds to her left inner thigh,” according to the report.
Officials said the responding deputy made a temporary tourniquet out of his belt and applied it to the woman’s right leg until he was able to apply a proper tourniquet to both legs.
The deputy was taken to Lake Monroe Hospital where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
According to the report, the scene was then turned over to the crime scene unit and major case detectives.
News 6 reached out to the sheriff’s office, who said the gun only fired once.
The sheriff’s office said that there will be an internal review of the incident, but no there is disciplinary action at this point.
