DELTONA, Fla. – Kevin Hines’ family describes him as a loving father and a passionate motivator. “He always pushed me to be better,” said Kevin’s son Marquis. But now, Hines’ son will have to live without one of his biggest supporters. “He dropped (him) off that day at school in the morning and he never saw him again. He waited for text messages that never got a reply back,” said Marquis’s mom, Stephanie Rivera. Less than 24 hours ago, Hines was shot killed while on the job at U.S. Postal Service regional processing facility in Missouri City, Texas.
His alleged killer, Derrick Lott, a postal employee, is now behind bars on a $2-million bond. “It was three in the morning. I stayed home alone,” said Marquis. “Then he called me and said ‘I haven’t seen Dad, I haven’t heard from Dad and the cops are at the door,‘” said Stephanie. As soon as his mom Stephanie Rivera heard the news early Wednesday, she got Marquis on a plane to Deltona and gave him the news when he arrived at their home. Marquis said learning about what happened to his dad has been tough to accept.
“I felt something but I just didn’t want to believe it. you know our parents say they can feel something happened to their kids. I’ don’t know I just felt it. But I didn’t wanna think about it,” said Marquis. He plans to continue living by his dad’s example, motivating himself, and others along the way.
