PALM BAY, Fla. – A homeowner returned fire after a suspected car burglar fired at them in a Palm Bay neighborhood, according to police.
The shootout happened in the driveway of the home last Friday at 1 a.m., following several attempted car break-ins in the area of Titan Road and Dagget Avenue.
A neighbor shared video where police said the burglaries all started.
That neighbor told News 6 reporter James Sparvero he thinks there were at least three burglars because he said one of them was driving the getaway car, while another stole a gun from another neighbor’s truck, and a third person tried breaking into a car too.
Ultimately, all of them headed in the direction of where police said an armed homeowner confronted them.
Emergency responders Friday reported what happened next.
“Homeowner came out and the suspect fired rounds at the homeowner,” a police officer said.
“They were starting to break into the complainant’s truck. He approached and then fired shots,” a dispatcher was heard over the radio, a well.
The homeowner was OK.
However, police said Javone Williams, 26, was shot, rode to the hospital, and was then taken to the county jail where he is now.
On Saturday, Williams faced a judge at the jail, and a prosecutor argued he shouldn’t have a bond because of his criminal history which she said is very similar to this story.
“The defendant has a pending aggravated assault with a firearm, shooting into a building, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and a discharge of a firearm in a public place,” the assistant state attorney said. “There’s nothing that would, based on the facts and circumstances of this case, protect the public.”
The judge agreed and revoked Williams' bond.
The charges he’s facing, including shooting at the homeowner, could send him to prison for life.
No one else has been arrested.
