Evacuation order lifted for homes, businesses near Port Orange wastewater treatment plant

Incident investigated near Oak Street and Spruce Creek Road

PORT ORANGE, Fla. – An evacuation order was lifted Wednesday for areas surrounding the Port Orange wastewater plant after a hazmat scare, officials said.

“Please avoid the area of Oak St. and Spruce Creek Road as there is a hazmat incident happening at the wastewater treatment plant,” a Facebook post from the Port Orange County Professional Firefighters Association stated earlier in the day. “Evacuations 1/4-mile around have been ordered.”

Port Orange police said a third-party vendor offloaded a chemical into the wrong tank, creating the “potential to cause a possible hazmat situation at the Sewer Plant at 817 Oak Street.”

As a precaution, residents and businesses near the plant were asked to evacuate or shelter in place while emergency crews managed the situation.

All evacuation and shelter in place orders were lifted before noon, and residents were permitted to return to their homes.

No other details have been released.
