Large chunk of ice falls from sky, pierces roof of Florida house

No one hurt in Palm Coast incident

PALM COAST, Fla. – A large chunk of ice fell from the sky and into a Central Florida house, but no one was injured, officials said.

The incident occurred at 55 Seattle Trail in Palm Coast.

Photos released by the Palm Coast Fire Department show the impact left by the ice, which punctured the home’s metal roof. Officials believe the ice was falling at a high velocity.

“There was significant force from what fell,” Palm Coast Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill said. “It did damage a metal roof.”

It’s not yet known where the ice came from.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and Palm Coast Fire Department were called to the scene, and an investigation is underway.

Palm Coast Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill said emergency crews responded to the home along Seattle Trail after receiving reports of ice striking both the residence and a nearby roadway.

“This is a first for me,” Berryhill said. “It’s not something we see every day.”

The fire department contacted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), suspecting the ice could have come from an aircraft. The FAA confirmed it is investigating.

Berryhill emphasized how dangerous the situation could have been if someone had been inside the home or nearby.

“A large object falling from the sky is going to gain speed fast,” he said. “It could cause tremendous bodily harm and even death.”

The homeowners told News 6 they are grateful they weren’t home at the time.

The FAA has not yet determined the source of the ice.
