ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A local contractor in Volusia County has been arrested after taking around $23,000 from an Ormond Beach couple for a project he never started, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

Customers hired John Day, owner of Coastal Stair Company LLC, in the fall of 2022, sending him a $23,027 deposit for materials, deputies said. They never heard from Day again, and the incident was reported recently to the sheriff’s office in January.

Investigators said Day told them Hurricane Ian damaged the Ormond Beach home he rented and destroyed the materials for the job.

He said he stored the materials in the basement, but the owner of the home said the home did not have a basement and did not sustain significant damage from that hurricane, according to investigators.

Day was charged with grand theft, organized scheme to defraud, and arrested for failure to appear on a charge of engaging in contracting without certification, deputies said.

Day was booked at the Volusia County Branch Jail and later released on $31,000 bail.
