DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Daytona Beach police have made an arrest in a deadly shooting that prompted a large police response on Tuesday.
Around 4 a.m., police responded to reports of a burglary and a person shot on Butler Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers found two injured victims, a news release states.

Police say a preliminary investigation revealed that several individuals were inside the residence when a knock was heard at the door. Witnesses then observed two masked men with firearms who forced their way inside, the release states. An altercation ensued, during which one victim was pistol-whipped and another was shot, according to the release. The suspects then fled the scene, police said.
On Wednesday, police announced that John Fitzgerald Oliphant III, 20, was arrested to face charges of first-degree murder and burglary with battery in connection to the case.
Investigators also determined that the suspects and victims were previously acquainted through drug-related activities.
Daytona Beach police Chief Jakari Young told News 6 the shooting happened at a “problem house” that has been a source of complaints from neighbors.
Police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
