As high school seniors hit New Smyrna Beach, people hope teens play it safe

Increased police presence, tougher penalties for violations

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Hundreds of high school seniors are flocking to the beach Thursday for “Senior Skip Day,” but this year, law enforcement is stepping in to keep things under control.

A Special Event Zone is now in effect in New Smyrna Beach, bringing stricter regulations, increased police presence, and tougher penalties for violations. Officials say the goal is to prevent the kind of disorder seen on previous high-traffic days, including Presidents Day, when large teen crowds led to multiple arrests — including gun-related incidents.

As part of the crackdown, police are enforcing doubled traffic fines, and any vehicles causing disturbances can be impounded for up to 72 hours. Officers are also monitoring crowd sizes and responding to any signs of trouble.

While some visitors appreciate the added security, others feel it puts a damper on the fun.

Tara Miller, a visitor, believes the presence of officers is a good thing.

“Honestly, I think it doesn’t hurt to have law enforcement around. We heard last year got a little out of control on Senior Skip Day,” she said.

Romy, a senior from Orange County, expressed a different perspective.

“I don’t know. I feel like everyone’s -- if police are coming, we can have fun, not really trying to have any police kind of interview us or anything like that, but we’ll see what goes on,” she said.

Mulan, a senior from Polk County, hopes this year stays peaceful.

“I hope everybody is smart. Hope no one brings a gun like last year. I hope we can all stay positive and have a great day,” she said.

For now, police say the Special Event Zone will remain in effect until the crowds clear out tonight. However, with Spring Break beginning this weekend, officers warn that heavy patrols will continue, and a juvenile curfew will also be enforced.
