‘Chaos is not welcome:’ Volusia sheriff threatens ‘travel advisor’ over Daytona Beach spring break recommendation

Sheriff Mike Chitwood responds to Daily Mail article

Daytona Beach, Fla. -- This area has come a long way since the days of MTV's Spring Break. This Labor Day Weekend, catch free concerts at the Daytona Beach Bandshell on Friday and Saturday. Baseball lovers can watch the Daytona Cubs through Sunday, and there's also the third annual Main Street End of Summer Party & Rum Fest at Main Street Station on Sunday.

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood warned a “travel advisor” on Thursday that spring breakers are not welcome after the man told Daily Mail that Daytona Beach was the next destination.

The sheriff posted on Facebook in response to the article, which cites 24-year-old Gregory Turovsky saying his clients are looking for other destinations for spring break after crackdowns by police in Miami Beach and Panama City Beach.

“Let me be the first to tell you, Gregory, that your spring break chaos is not welcome here, either. If you thought crackdowns in other spring break towns were tough, just wait,” Chitwood wrote in the post. “We will enforce every law with zero tolerance and enhanced penalties. We don’t want that violence and carnage in our community. There’s a reason cities across Florida keep saying ENOUGH.”

The Panama City Beach police chief posted Sunday on Facebook, saying, “Panama City Beach can no longer be a spring break town.”

“That time is over. Every year we try to manage it, and every year it brings more challenges. I’m not willing to risk the safety of our city to hold onto something that no longer works,” Chief J.R. Talamantez wrote.

In February, Chitwood put out a warning to teens and parents ahead of Central Florida’s spring break. During the peak of spring break, there were 191 arrests in Volusia County made by deputies. However, Chitwood noted the atmosphere felt calmer.

“You had an increase in patrol and visibility from everybody,” Chitwood said.
