2 Apopka women killed in three-vehicle crash in Volusia County

DeLAND, Fla. – Two Apopka women were killed Tuesday morning in a three-vehicle crash in Volusia County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The fatal crash was reported around 7:10 a.m. on New York Avenue at DeLand Crossings Boulevard, east of DeLand.

The FHP said a 27-year-old Apopka woman was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla east on New York Avenue when the car traveled into the westbound lanes for an unknown reason and struck a van head-on. A 2007 Nissan Versa then hit the side of the van, the FHP said.

The driver of the Corolla and a passenger, a 20-year-old Apopka woman, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to an FHP report.

The van driver, a 58-year-old Daytona Beach man, suffered minor injuries, troopers said. The driver of the Versa, a 30-year-old New Smyrna Beach man, was not hurt, the FHP said.

Everyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seat belt, the FHP report stated.

Westbound lanes of New York Avenue, which is also State Road 44, were closed in the area.
