The 40-year-old woman was a passenger in a vehicle that had stopped on the right shoulder as she and the car’s driver sought to switch positions due to the driver’s fatigue, according to a crash report.

When the driver left the vehicle, two dogs that were also inside ran into the road, troopers said. The woman ran after the dogs and was struck by a van, driven by a 33-year-old Orange City man, the report said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the dogs were returned to the vehicle uninjured, troopers said. The Orange City man, too, suffered no injuries in the crash.

Troopers said the crash is still being investigated.
