ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A 71-year-old woman was killed after being hit by an SUV while trying to cross State Road A1A in Ormond Beach, according to a news release.

Police said the crash happened Monday around 6:42 p.m. on 100 S. Atlantic Ave., also known as A1A, near the intersection with Bosarvey Drive.

According to the release, the woman was crossing A1A to get to her family’s condo but was not in a crosswalk.

Police said she paused at the median due to traffic, then proceeded to walk east across the A1A northbound travel lanes, where she was hit by the SUV.

The woman died from her injuries at the hospital, according to the release.

Both north and southbound lanes of A1A were closed for around three hours during the investigation.

The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.
