Motorcyclist killed after losing control, striking tree in Volusia County

Crash happened on DeBary Avenue and Main Street

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A motorcyclist was killed after losing control of his bike and crashing into a tree in Volusia County on Saturday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened at DeBary Avenue and Main Street around 7:04 p.m.

According to a crash report, the motorcycle was driving west on DeBary Avenue, approaching Main Street in the outside lane.

Witnesses reported that the motorcyclist was traveling above the posted speed limit and ran a red light at the intersection before swerving right to avoid hitting traffic traveling on Main Street.

Troopers said the driver lost control of the motorcycle and ran off of the roadway right and struck the curb. As a result, the motorcyclist collided with a traffic sign before striking a tree.

The driver, identified as a 71-year-old Deltona man, was thrown from the bike.

According the report, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
