DeLand man killed in motorcycle crash on Magnolia Avenue in South Daytona

Police ID victim as Luke Tyler Smith

SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. – A 26-year-old man was killed late Wednesday night when he struck a tree during a motorcycle crash in South Daytona, according to police.

South Daytona police on Thursday said Luke Tyler Smith, of DeLand, died in the wreck, which happened around 8:15 p.m. on Magnolia Avenue near Temple Road.

According to police, officers were called to the area and found Smith suffering from injuries. First responders performed life-saving measures, but Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

In a statement, police said Smith was operating the motorcycle in a “careless manner,” causing him to lose control of the bike. Smith was ejected from the motorcycle and struck a tree, police said.

Earlier, police said Smith was with a group of friends on E-bikes and was trying to catch up with them when he crashed.

Anyone with information about the fatal wreck is asked to call police at 386-322-3030.
