Seizure turns critical as elderly man crashes near former Sears in Melbourne

Domestic violence call becomes officer-involved shooting in Melbourne, police say

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A seizure ended with a crash that left the driver in critical condition Friday afternoon, according to the Melbourne Police Department.

Police said they received 911 calls about the crash, which involved an elderly man who had suffered a seizure and crashed into the construction site at 1050 S. Babcock Street — formerly a Sears building.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered that the man had crashed through a perimeter fence at the northwest corner of the property, police added.

“The vehicle then struck a parked vehicle, and came to rest a short distance away,” the crash report reads. “The driver was not breathing and (was) unresponsive.”

First responders were able to get the driver to begin breathing again, though he remains unresponsive, a news release shows.

According to investigators, a medical episode likely caused the crash, and the man was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

His age has not been released.
