ORLANDO, Fla. – Nicole made landfall in Florida as a Category 1 hurricane, marking the third time ever the state has dealt with a hurricane in November.
The storm made its official Florida landfall in North Hutchinson Island, just south of Vero Beach, with sustained winds of 75 mph. It weakened about one hour after landfall to a tropical storm.

The last Florida hurricane landfall in November was Kate in 1985, which was a Category 2 storm.
Before Kate’s landfall in November 1985, the 1935 Yankee Hurricane was the first November landfall in Florida since recordkeeping began in 1853, according to the Associated Press.
Nicole has caused serious beach erosion on the coast, high seas and rip currents. Rain could add up and lead to more flooding in areas that flooded during Hurricane Ian.
The center of Nicole will move across Central Florida, possibly emerge over the far northeastern Gulf of Mexico, and then move across the Florida Panhandle and Georgia.
