ORLANDO, Fla. – Tropical Depression Four upgraded to Tropical Storm Cindy in the Atlantic Ocean late Thursday, and the weather system is expected to strengthen over the next several days.

The National Hurricane Center said Cindy was 1,110 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and was moving toward the west-northwest at 14 mph while packing sustained winds near 40 mph, with higher gusts.

The system is expected to turn northwest during the next few days.

On the current forecast track, Cindy is expected to remain northeast of the northern Leeward Islands through the weekend. Its track after that is unclear.

The next named storm will be called Don.
