ORLANDO, Fla. – The National Hurricane Center identified the first tropical wave of the season on Wednesday.
The tropical wave, producing scattered showers and thunderstorms, was located in the Central Atlantic in between Africa and the Lesser Antilles.
A tropical wave is an elongated area of relatively low pressure that moves east to west across the tropics. Given favorable conditions, these features can lead to tropical cyclone formation. In the Atlantic basin tropical cyclones are known as tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes. The status is based upon maximum sustained winds.
Significant development of this disturbance is not expected and this tropical wave is no threat to Florida.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will release its forecast for the 2024 hurricane season Thursday morning.
Hurricane season officially begins June 1.
