ORLANDO, Fla. – Potential Tropical Cyclone 6 is currently in the Bay of Campeche, previously known as Invest Storm 90L.
The National Hurricane Center anticipates this system to become a tropical storm by Monday as it moves north to northwest near or along the western Gulf of Mexico coast.
Storm watches have been issued for a portion of northeastern Mexico and additional watches could be issued for the southern Texas coastline tonight.
As the system rides along or near the Texas coast the track shows it strengthening to category one hurricane by midweek, before making landfall. While it’s still too early to know exactly where landfall will occur, the track puts it anywhere between the upper Texas and Louisiana coastlines.
Potential Tropical Cyclone 6 is expected to bring heavy rainfall and the risk for flash flooding from the coast of northeastern Mexico into coastal Texas and Louisiana through late this week.
The next named storm will be called Francine.
Sept. 10 marks the peak of hurricane season, which runs through November.
