ORLANDO, Fla. – Hurricane season is entering its final month on an active note.
The National Hurricane Center on Thursday highlighted three areas across the Atlantic basin for potential tropical development.
1. In the Caribbean
A broad area of low pressure appears likely to develop over the next day or so. After that, gradual development is possible and a tropical depression could form over the weekend or early next week.
The system is then expected to move to the north or northwest through the Caribbean. Model guidance suggests there is the potential for this system to enter the Gulf of Mexico by the middle of next week, however, there is uncertainty on how it interacts with another nearby system in the northeastern Caribbean.
There is a 10% chance for development over the next two days and a 60% chance over the next seven days.
2. Northeastern Caribbean
A trough of low pressure near Puerto Rico is creating widespread showers and thunderstorms around the Greater Antilles. Some slow development is possible over the next few days as it moves to the west. Beyond the weekend, the system is likely to be absorbed by the previously-discussed system in the southwest Caribbean .
Development of this system is 10% over the next seven days.
3. North Atlantic
Far away from Florida, showers and thunderstorms have developed near the center of a non-tropical low pressure system. Any additional development into a tropical or subtropical system is expected to be slow as it moves east.
Development chances are at 20% over the next two and seven days.
The next name for the 2024 hurricane season is Patty.
Hurricane season runs through November.
