NHC monitoring another potential system in southwestern Atlantic as season draws to a close

ORLANDO, Fla. – With only a few weeks left in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, there is one area to monitor as Tropical Storm Rafael continues to weaken.

Tropical Storm Rafael is still spinning in the Gulf of Mexico after making landfall in western Cuba on Wednesday. Wind shear and dry air will continue to hinder its development in the next couple of days. It’s expected to continue to weaken and become a remnant low around Tuesday in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

To the east of Bahamas, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring another potential system in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean as the season draws to a close.

This tropical wave, labeled Invest 98L by the NHC, has a very low likelihood of development as it encounters some dry air and wind shear.

However, heavy rains and gusty winds are possible through Sunday night across Bahamas. Tropical models show a sharp easterly turn early this week due to an incoming cold front.
