Florida to battle through rain and storms before a pleasant New Year’s Eve

Here’s the latest

Storm Prediction Center has held steady with their low end risk for strong storms for the day today (WKMG 2024)

ORLANDO, Fla. – It’s the FINAL countdown! Cue that iconic keyboard instrumental as we tick closer and closer to New Year’s Eve 2024.

There’s one kicker however — we Central Floridians have one last potential rigorous cold front and storm system to conquer.

Storm Prediction Center has held steady with their low end risk for strong storms for the day today (WKMG 2024)

The parent low pressure and frontal wave we’ve been highlighting for the last several discussions has indeed kicked off and created an onslaught of destructive weather for folks in Texas all the way as far east as the Florida Panhandle and Georgia as you read this article. Sunday, that same feature is going to reach us.

We already have rain creeping in from the south and even more beginning to fire to our west in the Gulf of Mexico thanks to the jet streams supporting our severe weather outbreak to the northwest. This area of moisture is more or less on a collision course with the frontal band rocking in with the low pressure now curving back toward the northeast.

Everyone should receive a bit of rain today. How much is going to be very heavily determined by the state of the frontal line as it passes from over water ashore the Central Florida peninsula. Our greatest risk for anything stronger than a typical rain shower remains to the north. Marion, Putnam, Flagler and possibly Volusia counties should remain vigilant as we go through the early to mid afternoon hours of today.

Future radar indicates some potential isolated strong storms in our northern viewing area with greatest rain chances around 2-4pm today (WKMG 2024)

As you head out the door to church or breakfast this morning, skies will be fairly cloudy with rain starting to trickle in around 10-11 a.m. at the earliest. Our highest amounts will likely reach us between shortly after noon ‘til about 4-5 p.m. today. Again, our northern counties do seem to have the greatest likelihood of not only receiving pockets of heavier rain but the chance at some thunderstorms that could try to get a little stronger pending what the sun can do during the first half of the day.

If you project what we see on radar currently, we anticipate the all clear can sound as the sun sets and we approach 7 p.m. for our central counties. Then, the east coast will be good to go by about 8 p.m., give or take.

Dry air will RAPIDLY fill in behind the tail end of this front, but we won’t cool down as much as we have previously. So, humidity will thankfully come down some and skies will be clear for your New Year’s Eve.

Then rain chances start to rise once more, only slightly, as we get toward the back end of the week with the approach of another cold front. Thanks to this first wave of enhanced weather, this feature won’t have the same characteristics as the one we’re faced with now. As such, less rain but more cold air for the first weekend of 2025.
