Wild weather: Heavy snow sweeps across Gulf Coast months after damaging hurricanes

1st-ever blizzard warning issued for Gulf Coast

Winter Storm Warnings issued along Gulf Coast where 4 of 5 hurricanes made landfall in 2024.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Gulf Coast was the site of five hurricane landfalls last summer.

Months later, snow will meet sand from around Corpus Christi, Texas, to the the northern Big Bend of Florida.

Hurricane Hunters flew a mission into the winter Monday night to get better weather data for forecast. Hurricane Hunters oftentimes fly into winter storms during the hurricane season offseason.

Winter Storm Warnings for significant snow and ice encompass most of the Gulf Coast of the U.S. A blizzard warning is effect from just east of Houston to Central Louisiana.

To be considered a blizzard, winds have to be sustained at 35 mph with visibility reduced to 1/4 mile or less for three consecutive hours.

Snowfall records could be shattered from New Orleans to Tallahassee.

The Houston area, heavily damaged by Hurricane Beryl in July officially picked up.

Category 2 Hurricane Francine made landfall in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, and moved west of New Orleans. Central Louisiana, including New Orleans is expected to pick up 3-6 inches of snow.

Winter Storm Warnings issued along Gulf Coast where 4 of 5 hurricanes made landfall in 2024.

Hurricanes Debby and Helene made landfall near Perry, Florida, in September.

Up to an inch of snow is possible in addition to ice accumulation of up to .3 inches.

4-8 inches of snow are possible in Florida Panhandle, threatening the all-state record of 4 inches set back in 1954.

Hurricane Milton made landfall in Southwest Florida. Snowfall is not expected to reach as far south as Milton’s landfall.
