Severe Weather Preparedness: How to find your safe place in a storm

When severe weather strikes, a few minutes can mean the difference between life or death. That’s why everyone should know where the safe places are in their home or office.

Our News 6 meteorologists recommend identifying that place well in advance of severe weather so that you’re prepared.

That “safe place” is ideally an interior room on the lowest floor of your building or home.

It should be centrally located and small, like a bathroom or closet, that’s away from exterior windows, doors and skylights.

Selecting a central location away from exterior windows and doorways helps protect against debris that could breach the outer walls and openings to the home.

If you don’t have a “room” that meets the safe place criteria, try a hallway or sturdy piece of furniture to shelter underneath. Remember to bring blankets and cushions to protect your head and neck.

An emergency supply kit should always be ready, stocked with items like a first aid kit, weather radio, charged phone, water, non-perishable snacks, and any important medications.

If you have children, don’t forget a few items to help them pass the time, such as books or toys.
