FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – A curfew for youth under the age of 16 was unanimously approved by the city council on Thursday.
According to Chief of Police Matt Doughney, this measure will serve as an additional resource for officers to protect the community’s youth.
“The intent of this is to protect the children of our community so they aren’t involved in crimes or are victims of crimes,” said Doughney.
The new curfew, which will take effect from 11 p.m. - 5 a.m., applies to anyone under 16 who is not supervised by an adult. The first violation will result in a warning, while a second offense will incur a $50 fine.
“I grew up with a curfew, so the thought of people under 16 being home at 11 (p.m.) doesn’t bother me,” said resident Denise Schieffer. “I don’t particularly like being forced to be home, but I understand the need.”
Chief Doughney said there are some misconceptions with the curfew.
“There are a lot of misconceptions, one of them being this is going to be for people under the age of 18. It’s only for youth under 16,” Doughney said.
Doughney also said the curfew will be important during peak tourism times.
“We are a very small community, youth are our future, and this ordinance is designed for that. This is not to harass kids, it’s to keep them safe, especially after 12 o’clock at night,” Doughney said.
