HOLLY HILL, Fla. – A 95-year-old woman was found dead early Thursday after her house in Holly Hill caught fire, according to authorities.
Police and firefighters responded to a home in the 500 block of Eagle Drive, where Holly Hill fire Chief James Bland said the first Volusia County team entered and was “flashed” by the fire — melting their equipment — having to wait before going back in.
The woman had a live-in caregiver who was awoken by the fire, according to Bland. The caregiver, who Bland said is not related to the woman, rushed out of the home with a cat and went to a neighbor, their father, for help.
By the time they got back to the woman’s home, the fire had grown too strong to reenter, Bland said.
There’s no known cause for the fire at the time of this report and the State Fire Marshal has taken over the investigation, according to Bland and Holly Hill police Chief Byron Williams.
Preliminary information indicated the situation does not appear suspicious in nature, Williams said in a statement.
