Rough surf from Nicole collapses Beach Safety Office in Daytona Beach Shores

Volusia officials worry other buildings will tumble

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. – A Beach Safety Office in Daytona Beach Shores collapsed early Wednesday as rough surf and high waves caused by Tropical Storm Nicole pounded the beachside building.

The office building, located at the Dunlawton Beach Access, was leaning into the surf, with video showing the structure separated at about its midway point. No injuries were immediately reported.

Hurricane Ian damaged the building several weeks ago, but it was level on Tuesday before collapsing after a seawall washed away Wednesday.

Officials said they are concerned that more beachside structures -- homes, hotels and other buildings -- will also collapse as the shore is pounded by Nicole over the next 48 hours.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for barrier islands in Volusia County.

Nicole is expected to hit southeast Florida as a Category 1 hurricane early Thursday, but outer rain bands, rough surf, large waves and gusty winds started reaching Central Florida on Tuesday.

Here are the expected weather conditions in Central Florida in the coming days.
